The Kremlin has confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally made the decision to grant asylum to the ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and his family. This announcement comes after earlier reports that Assad and his family had been granted asylum in Russia.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, during his daily press conference, acknowledged that the decision was made by Putin himself but refused to confirm the exact whereabouts of Assad and his family. He also declined to provide details on when the last meeting between Putin and Assad took place, adding that there are no plans for a future meeting in the near term.
Peskov emphasized that Russia remains open to maintaining contacts “with those who will be in power in Syria,” highlighting Moscow’s ongoing diplomatic stance toward Syria’s political future.
