The United States continues to support the international recognition of Kosovo, including through discussions with NATO allies that have yet to recognize its independence.
This was stated by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Lawton during a hearing in the U.S. Congress, where he was asked about the Trump administration’s approach toward the four NATO member states that do not recognize Kosovo.
The question was raised by Congressman Keith Self, who highlighted the importance of the issue for regional stability.
In his response, Lawton said the United States continues its efforts to advance Kosovo’s international recognition and is also holding discussions with NATO allies that have not recognized its independence.
“The United States supports the international recognition of Kosovo. We continue discussions, including with NATO allies that do not recognize it. Returning to the dialogue on normalization between Serbia and Kosovo would be helpful in our advocacy for recognition,” Lawton said.
He assessed that returning to dialogue aimed at normalizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia would also strengthen U.S. efforts to secure additional recognition for Kosovo.
Lawton called on both Kosovo and Serbia to return to the dialogue “without preconditions.”
