The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has started collecting signatures from MPs to request the cancellation of two decisions made by the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO), which, according to the LDK, are threatening to increase the cost of living and bankrupt businesses.

MP Hykmete Bajrami announced that on Monday, they will submit to ERO the request to cancel the decision that led to a 16.1% increase in electricity tariffs, as well as the decision obliging 1,300 companies to enter the open electricity market starting from June 1.

“This decision has increased the price of electricity for consumers and threatens to trigger a new wave of inflation,” said Bajrami.

According to her, based on information from the producers’ association, about 200 companies that requested offers for electricity supply after June 1 received only one offer – from KESCO, the same company that currently supplies them with electricity. This, according to Bajrami, means that there is no functional free market for energy in Kosovo, even though ERO has licensed 19 operators for energy trading.

“The only offer that businesses have received is 260% more expensive,” she warned, adding that this situation could lead to the bankruptcy of many businesses.
