Ukraine and Moldova will jointly open the first cluster of negotiations within the European Union (EU) accession process, announced EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos following a meeting with Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olga Stefanishina.

“A productive conversation with Olga Stefanishina to confirm our support for opening the first cluster with Ukraine and Moldova at the same time, and as soon as possible,” the European Commissioner wrote on the social platform X.

According to Kos, Ukraine has made “significant progress on reforms,” and the European Commission has given “a clear positive recommendation to the EU Council to move forward with the first cluster.”

Stefanishina confirmed Ukraine’s commitment to cooperate with EU member states throughout the accession process.

“I spoke with European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, about the next steps in preparing to open the first cluster. I reiterated our commitment to engaging with member states to resolve all outstanding issues. I look forward to our meeting in Brussels,” Stefanishina stated on Platform X.

Ukrainian media had earlier reported that the European Union had considered the possibility of separating Moldova and Ukraine’s membership applications.
