Germany’s incoming Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, stated on Wednesday that solving trade disputes with the United States requires eliminating transatlantic tariffs altogether. His remarks come amid heightened tensions following new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

“Let’s set tariffs at 0% on transatlantic trade, and the problem will be solved,” Merz said, according to Reuters.

He also emphasized that Trump’s tariffs had a unifying effect on Europe, demonstrating the benefits of a joint trade approach.

“Europeans are determined to defend themselves, and this example shows that unity benefits the majority,” Merz added during a televised interview following the formation of a governing coalition with the Social Democrats.
