Montenegrin authorities have blocked a shipment containing 24 tons of expired beef from Brazil that was destined for the Kosovo-based company Apetit SHPK.
According to the Montenegrin newspaper Vijesti, the container was stopped by the Customs Administration at the Port of Bar on Thursday, September 24.
The Montenegrin Customs Administration said the container contained 1,321 packages of frozen beef with a total gross weight of 24,650 kilograms. During the inspection, officials found that the meat had expired on May 14, 2026.
“On September 24, 2026, Customs Administration officials inspected a container with frozen beef containing a total of 1,321 packages, with a gross weight of 24,650 kilograms. During the inspection, it was established that the meat had expired on May 14, 2026,” the authority said.
The shipment had been ordered by Apetit SHPK, a Kosovo company involved in the production and processing of meat products.
The latest seizure follows another case uncovered by Montenegrin authorities about a week earlier, when three additional containers carrying a combined 77 tons of beef were stopped.
According to the authorities, the original declarations showing the expired use-by dates had been removed and replaced with declarations displaying different expiry dates.
The meat from those three containers is expected to be destroyed once the remaining legal procedures are completed.
The Montenegrin Customs Administration said the World Customs Organization had also been notified so that other customs administrations could be alerted to the alleged method being used to attempt to distribute the meat.
Taking both cases into account, Montenegrin authorities said they had stopped the transit of a total of 102,491.03 kilograms — more than 102 tons — of beef.
Apetit SHPK is one of the companies operating in Kosovo’s meat production and processing sector. The company is owned by the Ferizi family and is based in Obiliq.
