Russia’s state-run news agency RIA Novosti has published a commentary outlining a hypothetical military conflict between Russia and Lithuania, describing a potential confrontation in the Baltic region as another “special military operation.”
The commentary, titled “Russia Faces Another Special Military Operation. It Will Be Very Short,” was written by Alexander Nosovich, editor-in-chief of the Russian regional outlet RuBaltic.
The article presents Lithuania as a potential target of a future Russian military operation and compares a hypothetical Baltic conflict with Russia’s war in Ukraine. The author suggests that Russia could rely on missile strikes, including weapons with nuclear warheads, rather than deploying large ground forces.
These are scenarios and claims presented by the author and do not constitute confirmation of an actual Russian military plan to attack Lithuania.
The commentary comes as Lithuania considers amending a constitutional provision that currently prohibits the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory. The Lithuanian parliament has approved the proposed amendment at first reading, with two further votes required before any final decision.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has said there are no immediate plans to deploy nuclear weapons in the country.
Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania would make the country a target for Russian nuclear weapons.
The RIA Novosti commentary also follows a September incident involving a Russian-made Gerbera-type drone that entered Lithuanian airspace. Nausėda said at the time that the drone had most likely been heading toward Ukraine before deviating from its course.
Moscow, meanwhile, has repeatedly stated publicly that it has no plans to attack European countries.
