Skopje – North Macedonia’s Parliament has passed amendments to the Consumer Protection Law, requiring medium and large retailers to publish product prices on their websites, reports RFE.
This move follows the government’s decision to cap profit margins on 102 product groups, aiming to enhance transparency and facilitate consumer price comparisons. Retailers must update prices daily and display them clearly.
The new regulations apply to major supermarket chains, while micro-retailers and individual traders are exempt. Violators will face penalties enforced by the State Market Inspectorate.
Additionally, the Competition Commission has launched proceedings against four major retail chains for alleged price-fixing and supplier boycotts, which could result in fines of up to 10% of their annual revenue.
Since February 20, over 1,000 essential goods must be sold at reduced prices due to margin limits. The government argues that these measures will foster competition and curb inflation in the food sector.
