President Vjosa Osmani today awarded the “Honor of the Republic” medal to survivors of wartime sexual violence in Kosovo: Vasfie Krasniqi-Goodman, Shyhrete Tahiri-Sylejmani, and Ramadan Nishori.
“Today and forever, these three names will be engraved in our people’s collective conscience,” Osmani said during the ceremony.
She emphasized that survivors, with their pain and courage, have illuminated the path to truth, justice, and hope.
“There are moments when words are not enough to express gratitude,” the president added.
Ramadan Nishori, who publicly shared his experience of sexual violence, expressed heartfelt thanks:
“I greet all our people who supported me. Thank you very much,” said Nishori.
Vasfie Krasniqi-Goodman called on other survivors of wartime sexual violence to seek justice, while Shyhrete Tahiri-Sylejmani thanked President Osmani for her support and all those who had the courage to stand with them.
🔴 Estimates suggest around 20,000 people were raped during the Kosovo war, but most stories remain untold due to fear of stigma and judgment.
