Peru’s President Dina Boluarte had planned to travel to the Vatican to attend the funeral of Pope Francis this Saturday, but Peru’s parliament has decided otherwise, denying her request to leave the country.
Under Peruvian law, the head of state must receive parliamentary approval before leaving the country. The unicameral parliament rejected her request with 45 votes against, 40 in favor, and 1 abstention.
Following Pope Francis’ death on Monday, Peru declared a three-day national mourning period. Peru will be represented at the funeral by Foreign Minister Elmer Schialer.
Around 50 heads of state and 10 monarchs have confirmed their attendance for the Pope’s funeral this Saturday at St. Peter’s Square in Rome.
