Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has strongly criticized the arrest of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, stating that it was an unprecedented move that left the capital without leadership.

“Taking him from office and locking him in a cell without trial, leaving an entire capital without its leader, is a major event. I can no longer remain silent on the new justice system.”

Rama Ends Five Years of Silence on Judicial Reform

For the past five years, Rama has avoided commenting on justice system reforms but now argues that his silence has been misinterpreted.

“Our silence has helped the new justice institutions up to this point, but constructive criticism is missing. I have no regrets for remaining silent, but I believe it has been misunderstood—not just by opponents of judicial reform, but also by some who expect special privileges.”

Despite his criticisms, Rama reaffirmed his support for an independent judiciary, stating that critical opinions should be expressed to strengthen the system.

Albania’s Fight Against Corruption

In his statement, Rama emphasized Albania’s ongoing fight against corruption, noting that the government has implemented modernization reforms to transform public services.

Veliaj’s arrest marks a turning point in Albania’s political and judicial landscape, raising questions about the limits of judicial authority and political accountability.
