European Union spokesperson Peter Stano has stated that following the recent actions by the Government of Kosovo, new measures against Kosovo may be imposed.

He mentioned that preliminary measures were taken due to many steps leading to escalation, and now these measures might be increased.

“Measures were imposed last year because a lot was happening that led to escalation, and instead of steps leading towards de-escalation, even more unilateral steps that lead to escalation have been taken by those actors. We said at the time that these measures could be extended or lifted depending on the situation’s developments. So, what will we do? We have measures in place, and these measures can be increased if European actors agree that they need to be increased,” he said in a Thursday conference.

Stano confirmed that the Kosovo Government needs to coordinate with international actors.

“We have made our stance clear to Kosovo, on many levels, in many ways, and through many partners. It is not only the EU; all of Kosovo’s international partners are telling the Pristina Government not to engage in these series of uncoordinated, negative, and unilateral steps. We hope that they will finally hear the message and prevent us from considering what measures we might take if the situation does not change,” Stano said.
