Intense seismic activity continues in and around the renowned Greek island of Santorini in the southern Aegean Sea.
According to the Geodynamic Institute, more than 100 tremors have been recorded since midnight, with the strongest measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, public broadcaster ERT reported.
Experts have clarified that these tremors are not linked to the volcanic activity observed on the island last week. However, they warned that the seismic activity could persist for up to a week.
Eftihimos Lekkas, one of Greece’s leading seismologists, stated that while stronger tremors are possible, he does not anticipate an earthquake exceeding 6.0 on the Richter scale.
Addressing the situation, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged island residents to remain calm and follow the guidance of the Civil Protection authorities.
