Throughout Germany, participants in the traditional Easter marches want to send a signal for peace and against war again this year. The main day of the traditional marches is Easter Saturday, with about 70 peace marches announced in Germany.
The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz (SPD), on the occasion of Easter, once again reaffirmed German support for Ukraine and justified it with German security interests.
Scholz said, “we all want a more peaceful world.” But peace without freedom means oppression. There is no peace without justice.
“Therefore, we support Ukraine in its fight for a just peace, for as long as it will be necessary. We do this also for ourselves, for our security,” he stated.
Scholz accused Russia under President Vladimir Putin of violating a principle that has been valid for decades: that borders cannot be changed by force. “But we have it in our hands to make this principle valid again. By continuing to support Ukraine, decisively and with prudence,” the German leader declared.
The Vice-Chancellor, Robert Habeck (The Greens), German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock (The Greens), and the head of the opposition party, CDU, Friedrich Merz have published Easter messages.
Meanwhile, the German Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy, Robert Habeck, in a video published on Thursday evening on the platform X, said, “we want peace. Yes. But the bitter and true answer is: there likely won’t be a quick and good end, even though we wish otherwise,” reports dw.
Regarding Russian aggression, Habeck emphasized, “we must prepare for the state of threat. Anything else would be naive.” Therefore, Germany would do well to invest more in its security. “We, Germany, the EU, we must fully defend ourselves, even from military attacks.”
Habeck stressed that he respects positions that, for moral reasons or religious beliefs regarding the sending of arms to Ukraine, reach a different conclusion from his. “I understand very well that people are afraid of an escalation of the war. I am concerned too.”
Habeck spoke against a “freezing of the war.” “Even though I understand very well that due to the high number of victims, there is talk of freezing the war, this position forgets so much that only Ukrainians can decide what price they would be willing to pay and under what conditions they would want to reach a ceasefire or an end to the war.”
