Serbian lawmaker Đorđe Komlenski of the Socialist Movement has called on the next parliament to make a referendum on Serbia’s membership in the European Union its first priority.
“Until this is done and citizens make a decision, we will continue to have the problems and dilemmas we face when it comes to the laws we adopt,” Komlenski said during a parliamentary session.
He argued that a direct vote would provide a clearer basis for Serbia’s future direction and help resolve political disputes surrounding legislation and the country’s relationship with the European Union.
Komlenski made the remarks as lawmakers entered the third day of debate on 59 items on the parliamentary agenda, including a proposed budget revision. MPs were also expected to debate amendments during the day.
The call comes amid Serbia’s prolonged and increasingly difficult path toward EU membership, with the country continuing to face political and institutional obstacles in its accession negotiations.
