Keith Kellogg, a U.S. official, proposes that Ukraine hold its delayed elections after a potential ceasefire agreement with Russia, emphasizing the importance of democratic processes during wartime.
The United States believes Ukraine should hold its postponed elections by the end of this year, particularly if Kyiv reaches a ceasefire agreement with Russia in the coming months, according to Keith Kellogg, a senior American official, in an interview with Reuters.
Kellogg, who serves as the U.S. envoy for Ukraine and Russia, emphasized that Ukraine’s postponed parliamentary and presidential elections should be held. “Most democratic countries hold elections in wartime. I think it’s important that they act that way,” Kellogg stated.
Alongside former President Donald Trump, Kellogg has been working on a plan to mediate a deal to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, which began in February 2022. Although details on their strategy remain scarce, their goal is to bring an end to the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II.
It remains unclear how Trump’s proposed plan will be received in Kyiv.
