The U.S. military conducted airstrikes on ISIS operatives in Somalia, marking the first such attacks since the start of Donald Trump’s second term.

The U.S. military launched airstrikes on members of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Somalia, marking the first such strikes in the African nation since the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term, Defense Secretary Mark Esper announced today.

Esper confirmed that President Trump monitored the attacks and coordinated with the Somali government. The Pentagon’s initial assessment revealed that several ISIS operatives were killed in the operation. Trump stated that the operation targeted senior ISIS planners and recruits. The Pentagon also confirmed that no civilians were injured during the strikes.

While Trump did not identify the ISIS planner or confirm whether they were killed in the raid, White House officials have not responded to requests for further comment.

The U.S. military warned that ISIS cells are receiving increasing guidance from the group’s leadership, which has relocated to northern Somalia. This includes instructions on how to kidnap Westerners for ransom, evade drones, and build their own small quadcopters.

It is estimated that there are hundreds of ISIS militants in the country, primarily located in the Kal Miskat mountains in the Bari region of Puntland, in northeastern Somalia, according to the International Crisis Group.
