Two women have died as severe weather continues to batter parts of Italy, with heavy rainfall, powerful winds, tornadoes and flooding causing significant damage across several regions.
The latest fatal incident occurred Thursday morning in Friuli, northeastern Italy, where a woman drowned after driving into a flooded road crossing.
The incident came shortly after another woman was killed by a tornado in Tuscany.
According to local reports, the woman was inside her apartment and attempting to close a window when the force of the storm shattered the glass, causing a fatal injury to her neck.
Severe weather has also caused extensive damage in Rome. Dozens of vehicles were damaged by falling trees, while two central metro stations were flooded following heavy rainfall.
The situation was also serious in the northwestern city of Asti, in the Piedmont region, where firefighters received around 70 emergency calls.
Emergency crews were deployed to assist residents of ground-floor apartments affected by flooding, as well as shop owners dealing with water damage.
Authorities remained on alert as severe weather conditions continued to affect several parts of the country.
Forecasters expect conditions to gradually improve across Italy after midnight, although authorities continue to monitor the situation following the widespread flooding, strong winds and tornado activity.
