US President Donald Trump has announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an immediate ceasefire regarding attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure.
Following the announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed Ukraine’s willingness to abide by such an agreement, provided Russia also agrees to it.
“With immediate effect, an energy ceasefire comes into force in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have agreed. Do not violate it,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Meanwhile, Zelensky told the US media outlet Axios that he had been informed of the development.
“But if the Russians agree to an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will agree too,” the Ukrainian president stated.
However, at the time of reporting, Moscow had not issued any official comment on the US president’s announcement.
Earlier, Zelensky had stated that Ukraine was prepared to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries if Russia stopped its attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
He stressed that any agreement to de-escalate the conflict must be reciprocal and backed by guarantees.
Trump’s announcement comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, with attacks on energy facilities causing considerable damage.
Despite the US president’s statement, the implementation of the ceasefire remains uncertain in the absence of public confirmation from Russia.
