U.S. President Donald Trump praised the European Union’s decision to suspend retaliatory tariffs against the United States, calling it a “smart move.”
Speaking to reporters, Trump noted that the EU is treated as a single bloc when it comes to tariffs, rather than as individual countries. He emphasized that the EU is “very tough, but very smart,” commending their decision to “hold back a little” after observing his firm approach toward China.
“They decided to hold back. I thought that was very smart,” Trump said.
His comments come a day after Trump suspended tariffs that had been imposed just a week earlier on several countries, replacing them with a baseline 10% tariff.
The move is seen as an attempt to stabilize global trade tensions, particularly amid ongoing disputes involving China. Trump’s administration had previously announced a steep 145% tariff on Chinese goods, which was confirmed earlier by the White House.
