U.S. President Joe Biden warned the Islamic State (ISIS) not to attempt to exploit any power vacuum created by the political transition in Syria. He stated that the U.S. had carried out around a dozen “precise airstrikes” within Syria against ISIS targets that day.
This was also confirmed by the U.S. Central Command (Centcom), which is responsible for U.S. interests in the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia.
Centcom reported that the U.S. conducted more than 75 airstrikes on Sunday in an effort to “eliminate ISIS camps in central Syria.” They emphasized that there were “no indications of civilian casualties,” as reported by the BBC.
“There should be no doubt – we will not allow ISIS to rebuild or take advantage of the current situation in Syria,” said General Michael Erik Kurilla, the Centcom commander.
“All organizations in Syria need to know that we will hold them accountable if they partner with or support ISIS in any way.”
