Severe flooding has affected parts of the United Kingdom, with multiple households in the Manchester area evacuated due to rising water levels.
Over just two days, the region experienced rainfall equivalent to the average monthly total, leaving cars submerged and streets overwhelmed. The authorities have declared a state of emergency in the affected areas, according to the Associated Press (AP).
Rescue Efforts in Manchester
Police in Manchester reported deploying mountain rescue teams to assist firefighters in rescuing residents from flooded properties and stranded vehicles.
“We still anticipate the possibility of further flooding. Conditions are likely to worsen before they improve,” warned meteorologist Tom Morgan.
Widespread Disruptions
The flooding and high winds have led to significant disruptions across the UK:
- New Year Celebrations: Outdoor New Year’s Eve festivities and fireworks were canceled in Edinburgh and several other cities.
- London Events: Despite the challenging weather, London’s New Year fireworks went ahead. However, the traditional New Year’s Day parade was delayed due to wind and rain, with performers wearing protective coverings over their costumes.
- Transport and Infrastructure: Flood warnings were issued for over 150 communities, primarily in northern England. Train services were canceled due to flooded tracks, and some highways were closed, adding to the chaos.
Ongoing Risk
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to stay vigilant and follow safety instructions. With further rainfall predicted, emergency services remain on high alert to manage the escalating crisis.
