The UN Security Council is set to hold a high-level meeting regarding the ceasefire in Gaza and Israel’s ongoing efforts to expand control over the West Bank, just before world leaders head to Washington for the inaugural meeting of President Donald Trump’s Peace Board, focused on the future of Palestinian territories.

The UN session in New York was initially scheduled for Thursday but was moved earlier after Trump announced the Peace Board meeting on the same date, creating overlapping agendas for diplomats intending to attend both events. This has raised concerns about potential conflicts between the UN’s most powerful organ and Trump’s new initiative.

Palestinian Ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, said regarding the meetings:
“We expect the international community to stop Israel and end their illegal annexation efforts, whether in Washington or New York.”

Foreign ministers from the United Kingdom, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and Indonesia are expected to participate in the monthly Middle East meeting of the 15-member Security Council, following requests from several Arab and Islamic countries last week to address the situation in Gaza and Israel’s controversial settlement expansion in the West Bank.

Trump’s Peace Board was originally conceived as a small group of global leaders overseeing his 20-point plan for Gaza’s future.
