American pressure on Moscow is increasing. The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a new package of sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia and Iran, in one of the most significant initiatives undertaken by the U.S. Congress in connection with the war in Ukraine.
The bill passed with 262 votes in favor and 159 against. It received support from 58 Democrats, while seven Republicans voted against it.
The initiative aims to target Moscow’s main sources of revenue, particularly the energy sector and the defense industry.
It also targets the so-called “shadow fleet,” which is used to circumvent sanctions and continue exporting Russian oil.
The legislation also provides for high tariffs on countries that continue to purchase energy from Russia.
Following approval by the House of Representatives, and earlier by the Senate, the bill now goes to President Donald Trump, who is expected to decide whether to sign it.
