Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) leader Miloš Vučević has said the party expects Aleksandar Vučić to head its parliamentary election list and become its candidate for prime minister if the party wins the upcoming elections.

Vučević said the SNS Main Board is expected to meet in about two weeks to determine the party’s electoral list, coalition partners and final election strategy.

“I believe our list will be called ‘United Serbia – Aleksandar Vučić’ and that Vučić will be first on the list and our candidate for prime minister, if we receive the citizens’ trust,” Vučević said in an interview with K1 television.

He stressed, however, that the final decision on whether Vučić will participate in the parliamentary elections rests with the Serbian president.

According to Vučević, if Vučić accepts the SNS proposal, he could resign as president and enter the election campaign as the party’s lead candidate.

“That is the wish of the SNS, and I believe also of a large number of citizens who support this political option,” Vučević said.

Vučević also said that Vučić had identified October 18 and October 25 as possible dates for the parliamentary elections. If either date is chosen, the elections would have to be called between September 3 and 10.

The SNS leader said his party intends to maintain the political course Serbia has followed over the past 14 years, while claiming that other political forces have moved to the opposite side of the political spectrum.

His remarks come as Serbia moves toward another potentially consequential election campaign, with Vučić remaining the central figure in the SNS’s electoral strategy despite no longer being eligible to seek another presidential term.
