Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced that he will step down from his position within the next few weeks, paving the way for early presidential and parliamentary elections.

His announcement follows months of anti-corruption protests across Serbia, led primarily by students after the tragic collapse at the Novi Sad railway station that claimed the lives of 16 people.

“I will remain president for only a few more weeks, and then I will resign,” Vučić said during a pro-government rally in Belgrade, according to international media reports.

He stated that his resignation would open the path for new elections and added that he would support his Serbian Progressive Party throughout the electoral process.

However, Vučić did not provide a specific date for his resignation or indicate when parliament would be dissolved to enable early parliamentary elections.

His second and final presidential term is currently scheduled to end in mid-2027.
