From July 1, Ireland will take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union until the end of the year. This is the eighth time Ireland has held the rotating presidency of the EU.

The Irish presidency pledged to advance an ambitious agenda focused on key themes of competitiveness, values, and security.

The opening ceremony will take place at Dublin Castle, attended by several of the European Union’s top leaders.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said the country is assuming this responsibility at a decisive moment for the EU, as the world faces growing uncertainty and unpredictability.

“We are committed to doing good work for the European Union and its citizens, working throughout our mandate to make the Union more prosperous, more secure, and to protect our shared fundamental values,” he said.

Martin also referred to countries aspiring to join the EU, saying Ireland will support them on their path toward membership.

“We will support those countries that wish to join the European Union in advancing their path toward membership, helping to ensure greater prosperity and stability in our neighbourhood.”

He added that economic prosperity is what enables the EU to achieve its political goals.

“To remain prosperous, we must improve our competitiveness, including on the global stage. President Costa has rightly declared 2026 the ‘European Year of Competitiveness.’”

Quoting an Irish proverb, Martin said:

“Ní neart go cur le chéile” — “There is no strength without unity.”

“By working together, we can deliver results for the 450 million people who call the European Union home.”
