Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that tougher sanctions on Russia, continued support for Ukraine, and increased defense cooperation across Europe are crucial matters that need to be addressed.
Writing on social media platform X on Monday, Zelensky said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is eagerly preparing to display tanks during the May 9 military parade marking Victory Day over Nazism. However, according to Zelensky, what Putin should be thinking about is how to end his war.
The Ukrainian leader noted that Monday marked 54 days since Putin ignored a U.S. proposal for a full ceasefire. He emphasized that a ceasefire is possible at any moment—”even starting today.”
“Without increased pressure, Russia will not take genuine steps toward ending the war. Today marks the 54th day that Russia has ignored the U.S. proposal for a full ceasefire. We believe a ceasefire is possible at any moment, even starting today, and it should last at least 30 days to give diplomacy a real chance. Putin is eager to show off his tanks at the parade, but what he should be thinking about is how to end his war. Three things are essential: harsher sanctions on Russia, continued support for Ukraine, and a significant increase in defense cooperation throughout Europe. Russia must understand that Europeans are capable of defending themselves,” Zelensky wrote.
