Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has described the cessation of Russian gas deliveries through Ukraine as “one of Moscow’s greatest defeats.” The remark follows the expiration of the contract that had allowed the transit of gas to Europe via Ukraine, marking a significant shift in energy dynamics.
When Vladimir Putin assumed Russia’s presidency over 25 years ago, the annual gas transit through Ukraine to Europe exceeded 130 billion cubic meters. Today, that figure has dropped to zero. Zelensky highlighted that Russia’s use of energy as a weapon and its cynical threats to partners has resulted in Moscow losing one of its most profitable and geographically accessible markets.
As a consequence, most European nations have adapted to the changing circumstances, with Ukraine pledging to support Moldova during its energy transition period. Zelensky also called for European political leaders to abandon “mafia-like schemes” with Moscow in favor of a more transparent energy policy.
He expressed hope for an increase in American gas supply to Europe, a point previously raised by former President Donald Trump, believing that such cooperation could lead to lower market prices. Zelensky emphasized that as more gas becomes available from reliable European partners, Europe will eliminate the last remnants of its dependence on Russian energy.
