Tomorrow marks the 14th attempt to constitute the Kosovo Assembly, with no signs that the situation will change. Lëvizja Vetëvendosje (VV) has made it clear that they will not back down on their nomination of Albulena Haxhiu for the Speaker of the Assembly. The proposed change in the voting method for electing the Speaker is also expected to remain unchanged, despite opposition from PDK, LDK, AAK, and Lista Serbe.
Albulena Haxhiu has yet to secure more than 57 votes in the previous attempts, while 61 votes are needed to be elected. The 14th session will continue at 10:00 AM tomorrow, following the suspension of the previous session on Friday.
In the past sessions, VV has proposed a secret ballot method for electing the Speaker, but the opposition parties have rejected it. Additionally, PDK and AAK have repeatedly urged VV to withdraw Haxhiu’s name and have suggested alternative candidates from their own parties. LDK has announced it will not vote for any proposal from VV.
Albin Kurti, the leader of VV, reiterated today that they will not back down on Haxhiu’s candidacy, emphasizing their constitutional right to nominate their representatives. He also stated that while he is willing to make compromises for forming the Government, he will not do so for constituting the Assembly.
In the wake of the 11th session’s failure, Kurti sent a letter to LDK’s Lumir Abdixhiku, proposing a coalition. However, Abdixhiku rejected the proposal, instead suggesting a new consultative process to include all parliamentary Albanian parties in forming a National Transitional Government. VV opposed this proposal, with Kurti pointing out that LDK should find it easier to cooperate with VV now, following past reforms.
Furthermore, the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, is being urged to intervene and call a consultative meeting with the political parties. The Presidency confirmed this week that Osmani will soon contact the parties for a comprehensive meeting.
