Dubravka Šuica, the European Commissioner responsible for the Mediterranean, will represent the European Union in the Peace Committee initiative launched by U.S. President Donald Trump, European Commission officials have confirmed.
According to Paola Pinho, Šuica will attend the upcoming meeting in Washington, D.C. on behalf of European institutions. However, she emphasized that the EU will not formally join the Peace Committee as a full member.
“We will not become members of the Committee. Commissioner Šuica will attend in her role as Commissioner for the Mediterranean and will represent our commitment to implementing peace in Gaza, as well as highlighting our overall contribution to Gaza and Palestine,” Pinho stated.
The Peace Committee is an initiative introduced by Trump on January 22 during the World Economic Forum held in Davos. The next session of the body is scheduled for February 19 in the U.S. capital.
Trump described the committee as potentially “one of the most important international mechanisms” and indicated it could operate in cooperation with the United Nations.
Divisions Within the EU
The European Union remains divided over participation in the initiative. While the bloc declined formal membership, it is expected to hold observer status within the committee.
Among EU member states, Viktor Orbán confirmed Hungary’s full participation and attended the committee’s founding ceremony. The event was also attended by Bulgaria’s incoming prime minister, Rosen Zhelyazkov.
Meanwhile, Italy, Cyprus, and Romania have accepted invitations to participate as observers rather than permanent members.
Regional Participation
From the Western Balkans, invitations to join the initiative have been extended to Kosovo and Albania. Kosovo’s President, Vjosa Osmani, previously confirmed her participation and attended the committee’s founding ceremony in Davos.
The initiative is primarily focused on advancing diplomatic efforts toward peace and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, while also strengthening international cooperation on regional stability.
