Germany’s Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, has warned that attacks against Iran could continue until their strategic objectives are met, signaling caution over expectations that the conflict may end soon.

Speaking during a meeting with his Cypriot counterpart Konstantinos Kombos in Nicosia, Wadephul said the United States remains focused on reducing Iran’s military capabilities, which he described as a threat to both regional neighbors and Europe.

“I believe these attacks will continue until this objective is achieved or until the Iranian side shows serious willingness to negotiate,” Wadephul said.

His remarks came after Donald Trump, the President of the United States, suggested on Monday that the war with Iran – which has evolved into a broader regional conflict – was “almost over.”

Wadephul stressed that European leaders must position themselves quickly to play a role in potential negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.

The German foreign minister also pledged solidarity with Cyprus in the event of new Iranian missile or drone attacks, though he ruled out direct military support.

He noted that the mutual assistance clause of the European Union treaties applies, adding that Germany would meet its obligations if Cyprus faced a security emergency.

However, Wadephul emphasized the distribution of military responsibilities within the EU, pointing out that several Mediterranean countries are already providing support to Cyprus, while Germany remains heavily engaged in security efforts in the Baltic region and the Baltic states.

Cyprus, meanwhile, is the EU member state geographically closest to the Middle East, placing it at the forefront of concerns over the escalating conflict.
