The Council of Europe has called for an immediate de-escalation of the conflict surrounding Iran, stressing that it poses a threat to both regional and global security.

This was stated in the final declaration issued by the leaders of the Council of Europe following the summit held in Brussels on March 19.

In the document, the leaders condemned Iran’s attacks on countries in the region, called for respect for sovereignty and international law, and demanded an immediate halt to the attacks.

The Council also expressed concern over the rising number of civilian casualties and the economic consequences of the conflict, calling for a moratorium on attacks against civilian infrastructure, including energy and water facilities.

The need to ensure freedom of navigation and strengthen maritime security was emphasized, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz. The Council of Europe aims to reinforce its maritime missions in the region without altering its mandate.

EU leaders reaffirmed their support for countries near the conflict zone and highlighted the importance of strengthening air defense systems and counter-drone operations.

In addition, the Council of Europe expressed its readiness to engage in diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and stressed that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons.

The statement also expressed serious concern over the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, reaffirming its commitment to a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.

EU leaders called for the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, where the situation remains severe.

The Council of Europe also called for de-escalation regarding the situation in Lebanon, supported the country’s sovereignty, condemned Hezbollah’s actions, and reaffirmed its support for the UN peacekeeping mission.
