Marc Botenga, a Member of the European Parliament from Belgium, has criticized the European Union for a complete lack of diplomatic engagement in efforts to end the conflict with Iran.

Botenga said the EU’s response to the crisis was “very weak” and argued that no real attempt at mediation was made. He emphasized that the EU should have condemned the war and violations of international law, while also criticizing how developments in the conflict were interpreted.

According to Botenga, European institutions failed to take an active role in a crisis affecting not only human rights but also Europe’s own strategic interests.

His comments follow the announcement of a two-day ceasefire between the United States and Iran aimed at reducing regional tensions. Despite the ceasefire, criticism of the EU persists for its lack of a stronger diplomatic response during the conflict.
