Athens, April 15, 2026 – A hacker group linked to Russia has compromised email accounts belonging to Greece’s National Defence General Staff, in what cybersecurity experts describe as part of a broader espionage campaign targeting Ukraine and NATO member states.

According to cybersecurity researchers from the group Ctrl-Alt-Intel, a total of 28 email accounts were breached. In some cases, attackers reportedly managed to redirect incoming messages and maintain persistent access even after passwords were changed, bypassing two-factor authentication systems.

The breach is believed to be part of a wider wave of cyber operations affecting military and state institutions across Europe.

Greek authorities stated that no classified information appears to have been accessed, adding that such incidents are routinely handled by national cyber defence structures.

Similar cyberattacks have also been reported in Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine, where military and judicial institutions have been targeted.

Security experts say the campaign reflects escalating cyber tensions linked to geopolitical conflict and the increased cooperation between NATO members and Ukraine, which continues to be a key focus of hybrid warfare operations.
