The Serbia Center (SRCE) party issued a statement today warning that the administration of Aleksandar Vučić and what they described as a “creeping dictatorship” have brought Serbia to the brink of complete financial isolation.

The opposition group pointed to recent stern messages from Brussels as confirmation of this growing risk. Specifically, they highlighted a statement from the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, who indicated that the European Union is seriously considering blocking payments from the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans. According to SRCE, this is a direct consequence of Serbia becoming a “European capital of corruption and lawlessness” under the current leadership.

Targeted Measures Against the “Regime Caste”

The party clarified that these potential EU measures are not intended to harm the Serbian people, but rather to cut off funding to a “regime caste” that has treated the state as its own private property.

The Growth Plan for the Western Balkans originally envisioned a direct payment of 400 million euros into the Serbian budget, alongside 1 billion euros in favorable loans. This funding is now in jeopardy because Brussels is no longer willing to finance what SRCE characterizes as Vučić’s autocracy, characterized by attacks on the political opposition and the suppression of free media.

The “Hungarian Scenario”

SRCE cautioned that Serbia is following the path of Viktor Orbán’s Hungary, which saw over 20 billion euros in funds blocked by the EU due to systemic corruption and the erosion of democratic institutions.

The party emphasized that the time for “political trading” with Serbian national interests has come to an end. They noted that Marta Kos has set the reform agenda and the rule of law as non-negotiable conditions for receiving EU funds. According to SRCE, the Vučić model of governance has surpassed even Orbán’s standards of corruption, making it unsustainable and a direct threat to the economic future of every citizen.

The statement concluded by asserting that the era of false promises regarding reforms is ending, and that the cost of these “irresponsible and criminal policies” should be borne by the leadership rather than the citizens.
