U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet with Pope Leo XIV and top Italian officials this Thursday, in what is being widely described as a high-stakes diplomatic effort to repair fractured relations between Washington, the Holy See, and the Italian government.

The visit comes in the wake of sharp public criticism from President Donald Trump, who recently attacked the Pontiff over his stance on the war in Iran and slammed Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her “unacceptable” defense of the Catholic leader.

A High-Stakes Agenda

According to an official U.S. statement, Rubio’s itinerary is packed with strategic meetings aimed at “aligning on global challenges”:

  • Vatican Audience: Rubio will meet Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace at 11:30 AM on Thursday.
  • Government Counterparts: Meetings are scheduled with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.
  • The Meloni Meeting: While not yet officially confirmed by her office, Prime Minister Meloni told reporters at the EU-Armenia summit in Yerevan that she “thinks” a sit-down with Rubio will occur.

Mending the Transatlantic Rift

Italian media have characterized the trip as a “relations thawing mission.” Tensions spiked after President Trump’s recent rhetorical broadsides, which threatened to alienate one of America’s most consistent European allies and the influential voice of the Vatican.

Rubio, who last visited Italy in February during the Winter Olympics, is seen as a stabilizing figure in the administration. His previous history with the current Italian leadership—including a February meeting with Meloni and a May 2025 meeting with the Pope alongside Vice President JD Vance—positions him as the primary envoy capable of navigating the current diplomatic friction.

Busy Day at the Vatican

The Pope’s schedule for Thursday underscores a busy day of international diplomacy. In addition to the morning audience with Secretary Rubio, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will meet with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in the afternoon.

As Washington seeks to shore up its bilateral relations, all eyes will be on Rome this Thursday to see if Rubio can successfully lower the political temperature.
