At least 16 people have been killed and around 130 others injured in a Russian drone strike on a shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, central Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as “cowardly” and vowed that Ukraine would respond.

According to Zelenskyy, the drones struck in two waves, with the second attack occurring approximately half an hour after the first and targeting emergency response teams that had arrived at the scene.

“Ukraine will undoubtedly respond,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.

Footage from the scene shows the moment a drone strikes the shopping centre, as flames and thick smoke engulf the building.

Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s Defence Council, said that several people remain missing and that the death toll could rise.

Of the approximately 130 people injured, at least 29 are in serious condition. Among them is a 14-year-old girl who suffered a traumatic brain injury, as well as four other children.

Rescue teams are continuing their search through the rubble of the shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Zelenskyy.
