The Basic Prosecution Office of Peja, Department for Serious Crimes, has officially filed an indictment against a defendant identified as M.N., suspected of attempting to smuggle migrants toward the border with Montenegro.

The indictment stems from an incident on March 18, 2026, in the village of Drelaj within the Rugova region. According to prosecutors, the defendant acted with the explicit intent of securing illegal financial gain.

The “Agreement” at Peja Bus Station

According to the prosecution’s case, M.N. met with several foreign nationals from Sudan at the Peja Bus Station. Following their request, an agreement was reached for the defendant to transport the group to a location near the Montenegrin border. The parties reportedly agreed that financial compensation would be paid upon reaching the designated destination.

Police Intervention

The smuggling attempt was intercepted when Border Police units spotted the defendant’s vehicle in the Rugova mountains. During the subsequent search:

  • The foreign nationals were identified as Sudanese citizens.
  • The defendant, M.N., was immediately arrested.
  • The vehicle allegedly used to facilitate the crime was seized as evidence.

Legal Consequences

The Prosecution states there is a well-founded suspicion that the defendant fulfilled the elements of the criminal offense of “Migrant Smuggling” under the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kosovo.

The case prosecutor has requested the competent court to find the defendant guilty and impose a sentence in accordance with the law. This case highlights the ongoing challenges Kosovo faces as a transit route for migrants seeking to reach the European Union via the “Balkan Route” toward Montenegro and beyond.
