Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivered a forceful message to foreign adversaries on Tuesday, declaring that Britain will not tolerate external attempts to incite antisemitic violence or social division.
The Prime Minister’s remarks came during a high-profile summit at 10 Downing Street, convened in the wake of a violent stabbing of two Jewish men in North London last week. The summit was attended by societal leaders and security officials to address a “disturbing spate” of anti-Jewish incidents across the United Kingdom.
Investigating Foreign Influence
In a significant escalation of rhetoric, Starmer revealed that British authorities are investigating whether foreign states—specifically Iran—are actively fomenting the recent surge in hate crimes.
“Our message to Iran, or to any other country that might seek to foment violence, hatred, or division in society, is that it will not be tolerated,” Starmer stated. He added that if a foreign power is proven to be behind these incidents, “these actions will have consequences.”
A Pattern of Violence
The summit follows a series of high-profile attacks that have shaken the British Jewish community over the past year:
- May 2026: A suspected arson attack at a former synagogue in East London (currently under investigation).
- April 2026: Two Jewish men stabbed in Golders Green, North London; a 45-year-old suspect has been charged with attempted murder.
- March–April 2026: Seven arrests made in a conspiracy to commit arson, and a targeted attack on four Hatzola ambulances.
- October 2025: Two Jewish men killed during a synagogue attack in Greater Manchester.
Increased Funding and “Claw-Back” Measures
The Prime Minister emphasized that security alone is insufficient and outlined a multi-layered strategy to confront the “forces driving this hatred”:
- Security Surge: An additional £25 million has been allocated for increased police patrols in Jewish neighborhoods.
- Community Support: £1 million will be distributed to local councils to improve community cohesion and combat antisemitic rhetoric.
- Academic Accountability: Universities will now be required to publish data regarding the scale of antisemitism on their campuses.
- Financial Sanctions: Starmer directed the Arts Council to “claw back” funding from any organizations found to be promoting or platforming antisemitic hate.
“We are confronting the drivers of this hatred directly,” Starmer concluded. “Protecting our citizens from both domestic extremism and foreign interference is a non-negotiable priority for this government.”
