US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States will strike Iran “much harder” if Tehran does not agree to sign a deal soon, following an exchange of fire in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military said its forces responded to Iranian attacks on three destroyers passing through the waterway, carrying out what it described as “self-defence strikes,” despite an ongoing ceasefire.
Iran’s military, however, confirmed strikes against US warships and accused Washington of attacking an Iranian oil tanker.
In an interview with US broadcaster ABC News, Trump said the ceasefire, which has been in place for around a month, is “working,” and described the US response as a “light strike.”
Meanwhile, on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed US destroyers successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz under fire, saying they suffered no damage, while Iranian attackers sustained significant losses.
“As we struck them today, we will strike them much harder and more violently in the future if they do not sign the agreement FAST!” Trump wrote.
He also expressed optimism that a deal with Iran could be reached soon, while his administration awaits Tehran’s response to a 14-point proposal aimed at ending the conflict.
Iran said it is still reviewing the document and will deliver its response through Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator.
