Health authorities in southwestern France have placed more than 1,700 people under lockdown aboard a luxury cruise ship after the death of a passenger and a suspected outbreak of severe gastroenteritis.
The vessel, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, arrived in the port of Bordeaux on Tuesday evening, May 12, 2026. The passengers—many of whom are British and Irish citizens—are currently prohibited from disembarking while medical investigations are underway.

According to regional health officials, the statistics of the outbreak are as follows:
- Total Passangers: 1,233
- Total Crew: 514
- Reported Illnesses: Approximately 50 passengers have displayed symptoms of acute gastroenteritis.
- Casualties: One 90-year-old passenger has died; medical tests are being conducted to determine if the death is linked to the outbreak.
Suspected Cause: Norovirus
Medical teams are currently conducting tests to confirm the presence of norovirus, a highly contagious virus often associated with confined spaces like cruise ships, which causes vomiting and diarrhea.
Voyage Timeline
The ship’s itinerary prior to the lockdown included:
- May 6: Departure from the Shetland Islands (Scotland).
- Stops: Belfast, Liverpool, and Brest (Western France).
- Current Location: Bordeaux (Arrived Tuesday evening).
- Destination: The ship was scheduled to depart for Spain, but the journey is on hold pending health clearance.
French authorities have stated that the lockdown is a preventative measure to ensure the virus does not spread into the local population and to provide proper care for those infected. Ambassador Cruise Line has expressed its cooperation with the health department, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all passengers and crew.
