A major scandal has shaken public opinion in Serbia after former Belgrade Police Chief and former adviser to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Veselin Milić, was arrested on suspicion of involvement in covering up a serious murder and tampering with evidence.

A court in Belgrade ordered Milić to be held in custody for 30 days as part of an investigation linked to the disappearance and murder of Aleksandar Nešović, known in criminal circles by the nickname “Baja.”

According to Serbian media reports, Nešović was allegedly shot and killed by Saša Vuković Boske during a meeting at a restaurant where Milić himself was also present. Reports claim that the former police official had previously attempted to mediate between the two men, who reportedly had earlier conflicts.

Following the crime, two police officers from Milić’s security detail, allegedly acting together with the main suspect, are said to have removed the victim’s body from the restaurant before burning it near the highway close to Šimanovci.

Meanwhile, investigators claim that Milić and another police officer remained at the restaurant in order to eliminate traces of the crime and erase security camera footage.

So far, nine people have been arrested in connection with the case, including three police officials. The scandal has sparked strong political reactions in Serbia, with opposition parties demanding the resignation of Interior Minister Ivica Dačić as well as senior police leadership.
