The United States Embassy in Sarajevo said on Friday that the Republika Srpska (RS) Government’s proposal to secede from Bosnia and Herzegovina is dangerous and irresponsible and that such a thing “would not mean independence, but end for Republika Srpska”.
On Thursday, the RS government said that in the next 30 days it will draw up an agreement to be sent to Bosnia’s other entity, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, for “peaceful separation”.
The government of the RS made this proposal during a meeting held on the eve of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly session, where the resolution declaring July 11 the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Genocide was approved. Srebrenica.
The American embassy said that this proposal is in violation of the Dayton Agreement and that it “endangers the sovereignty and territorial integrity and multi-ethnic character of Bosnia”.
“These are core US interests. The United States will protect and preserve them, among other things, by holding responsible those who endanger them”, the communiqué states.
She accused Milorad Dodik, the president of the Republika Srpska and the Government of the RS, of trying to justify this decision based on “lies and misinformation, in order to scare the people of the Republika Srpska into supporting them on this path dangerous”.
“The facts are simple and straightforward. There is no international conspiracy to divide the RS, and Dodik cannot find any statement where an American official calls for the extinction of the RS”, the communiqué continues.
She made it clear that, according to the Dayton Peace Agreement and the Constitution of Bosnia, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is the successor of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“The Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina does not give the entities or sub-state units the right to divide or “dissociate”. RS can only exist within BiH.”
Dodik’s actions, according to the Embassy, endanger the future within the Euro-Atlantic institutions that the people of Bosnia, including the RS, love.
The Prime Minister of RS, Radovan Vishkovic, said after the meeting that “this is not secession, peaceful separation is not secession. We will offer it, if you consider us a genocidal nation, which we are not, then we do not have to live together.” .
Dodik also attended the meeting.
Nedim Ademovic, constitutional law expert, told Radio Free Europe that no single entity, no single nation can carry out the peaceful dissolution of Bosnia and Herzegovina. /REL
