Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s meeting with national security officials to make a “final decision” regarding the conflict with Iran, officials in Tehran have insisted that “no final understanding has yet been reached.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei spoke on Iranian state television last night, following a social media post by the U.S. president.
According to statements reported by state media, Baghaei said that discussions between the parties are ongoing, but that no agreement has been reached so far.
He also responded to Trump’s post on Truth Social, in which the U.S. president stated: “Iran must agree that there will never be nuclear weapons.”
“We said goodbye to the language of ‘must’ 47 years ago. No Western party, when speaking about the Islamic Republic of Iran, can use the language of ‘must.’ We make our own decisions based on the interests and rights of the Iranian people,” Baghaei said.
He also criticized U.S. sanctions and reiterated Tehran’s longstanding positions, questioning the credibility of statements coming from Washington.
Baghaei further emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed to what he described as “hostile vessels.”
