Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has robustly reaffirmed Albania’s unwavering strategic priority to join the European Union, utilizing a colorful marriage metaphor to characterize the nation’s long-standing pursuit of European integration.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the Future Investment Initiative (FII) World Forum in Rome, Rama described the European Union as the most brilliant and courageous political architecture in human history. Despite structural hurdles and institutional warning signs often cited by current member states, the Prime Minister emphasized that Albania’s dedication to the European project remains total.

“I think the EU is the most beautiful, amazing, and brave imagination of humanity when it comes to politics,” Prime Minister Rama stated during an interactive session with CNN correspondent Eleni Giokos. “We are in love with Europe. I’m sure many people here know that when you fall in love, everyone tells you: ‘Don’t rush to marry because we know how it is.’ But that does not prevent you from marrying.”

A Long-Standing Romance: Moving Past the Engagement Phase

Rama expanded on his romantic metaphor to highlight the historical patience of the Western Balkan nations, contrasting Albania’s enduring enthusiasm with the administrative inertia occasionally displayed by Brussels.

  • The Romeo and Juliet Analogy: The Prime Minister humorously likened Albania’s historical accession journey to a classic courtship. “We have been in love for a long time, like Romeo under Juliet’s closed window,” Rama remarked, noting that when “Juliet” finally appeared, her parents offered polite hesitation rather than immediate entry.
  • An Unwavering Commitment: Despite the lengthy pre-accession process, Rama dismissed any alternative paths for Tirana. “We want to marry Europe because it is the right place to be. How things will unfold is another story, but we want this marriage—we are obsessed with it. We will get there, no matter what, and sooner rather than later.”

Geopolitical Balance and Strategic Investments

Beyond the cultural and political alignment with the European Union, the discussion touched upon Albania’s shifting economic landscape and independent foreign policy dynamics:

  1. Middle Eastern Relations: Rama underscored that Albania maintains excellent diplomatic and economic ties across the Middle East, drawing a sharp, distinct line only when it comes to the “criminal regime of Iran,” which Tirana has previously accused of orchestrating hostile cyber campaigns against Albanian infrastructure.
  2. The Zvërnec Project: On the economic front, Rama teased a major €4 billion hospitality and tourism initiative in Zvërnec, framing it as potentially one of the largest strategic tourism investments in Europe. The project aims to harmonize luxury ecological infrastructure with native environmental protections.
  3. A Warning on Social Media Ecosystems: Pivoting to broader European security, the Prime Minister concluded with a stark warning regarding digital vulnerability. He cautioned that unless Europe actively reforms its regulatory grip over social media algorithms, the continent risks fracturing internally, rendering conventional missile defense systems useless if the societal foundation beneath them erodes.
