The head of the Bundestag’s Foreign Policy Committee, Michael Roth, who during his visit to Serbia also met with President Aleksandar Vučić, said that the political atmosphere in Serbia is increasingly aggressive. He expressed his concern about offending Germany.
Rothi has stated that the situation is extremely disturbing and that it is not going in the right direction.
“Serbia needs a turning point, a strong commitment to democracy, fair and honest elections because time is running out, now we have a window”, he emphasized in an interview for TVN.
Roth has stated that his colleagues in the German parliament share the concern about the situation in Serbia.
“I expect the government and the president of Serbia to fulfill other criteria. Much needs to be done for an independent judiciary, rule of law, media freedom, freedom of expression. I have the impression that society is increasingly divided. This is a warning sign”, emphasized Rotih.
He pointed out that the political atmosphere in Serbia is increasingly aggressive and therefore the democratically elected politicians bear a special responsibility.
He also referred to last week’s UN General Assembly resolution declaring July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide and condemning genocide denial and glorification of war criminals, which official Belgrade opposed. and said that this reaction was shameful and that it disappointed him.
“So, I am very disappointed by such toxic reaction and rhetoric in Serbia”, he emphasized.
Rothi said that the victims should be remembered, regardless of their nationality, repeating that there was genocide in Srebrenica.
