Kosovo’s Ambassador to Brussels and chief negotiator, Agron Bajrami, has formally raised with EU Special Representative Peter Sørensen the controversial remarks made by a Serbian minister who publicly endorsed ethnic cleansing of Albanians in Kosovo.
Bajrami said the minister merely said out loud what Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić believes, arguing that the difference is that she expressed it openly while Belgrade is now trying to contain the political fallout.
“I officially raised with EU envoy Sørensen the alarming statement of a Serbian minister openly endorsing the ethnic cleansing of Albanians in Kosovo. The Serbian minister said out loud what the Serbian President thinks—she simply should not have said it publicly, while he is now trying to control the damage,” Bajrami wrote.
He further argued that such statements by Serbian officials constitute a clear violation of the 2023 Brussels Agreement, whose preamble commits both parties to overcoming the legacy of the past and recognizes that respect for territorial integrity, sovereignty, and the inviolability of borders is a fundamental condition for peace.
According to Bajrami, rhetoric that glorifies or justifies ethnic cleansing seriously undermines the EU-facilitated dialogue, erodes trust, and damages efforts toward normalization based on mutual recognition and respect.
He also dismissed Serbia’s attempts to distance itself from the minister’s remarks as empty damage control rather than genuine remorse or a rejection of the crimes committed during the Milošević era.
Bajrami reaffirmed that Kosovo remains committed to the EU-led dialogue, but stressed that the process can only succeed if its core principles are consistently upheld.
“What is the value of talking about implementation when Serbia continues to violate the agreements through both words and actions?” he concluded.
