A Russian missile of an as-yet unidentified type violated Polish airspace, prompting an immediate response from Polish authorities and NATO military structures, according to officials.
Following the detection of the missile, air defense and ground-based protection systems were activated, while forces along NATO’s eastern flank were placed on heightened alert.
An investigation is underway to determine the type of missile involved, its trajectory, and the circumstances surrounding its entry into Polish airspace.
NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus Grynkewich held an urgent discussion with Poland’s Chief of the General Staff to coordinate further defensive measures.
“Air defense was activated immediately, in close coordination with authorities in Warsaw. NATO will continue to take all necessary measures to protect its territory,” Grynkewich said.
NATO Supreme Allied Command Europe spokesperson Martin O’Donnell also confirmed that the alliance is closely monitoring the situation and cooperating with the Polish military.
“NATO remains in continuous contact with Polish authorities regarding the incident, which remains under full investigation,” O’Donnell said.
Polish authorities have not yet disclosed whether the missile caused any damage or whether it was neutralized by air defense systems.
The incident comes amid continued Russian missile and drone attacks against Ukraine, raising renewed concerns over the risk of the conflict spilling into NATO territory.
