China has rejected reports that Beijing plans to supply Iran with hundreds of air defense missiles, calling the claims false and without basis.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry responded after a Reuters report said Beijing was expected to provide Iran with between 300 and 400 shoulder-launched air defense missiles, with an estimated value of $60 million to $70 million.
“The reports are false and completely unfounded. China’s role has always been to promote peace and work toward ending conflicts,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said.
The denial comes after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he would be “very disappointed” with Chinese President Xi Jinping if Beijing provided military equipment to Iran.
Earlier, U.S. intelligence assessments reportedly indicated that China was preparing to deliver new air defense systems to Tehran as Iran seeks to rebuild and strengthen parts of its military capabilities with support from foreign partners.
The reports emerged amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, with Washington closely monitoring Tehran’s efforts to restore military assets and expand its defensive capabilities.
Beijing has repeatedly stated that it supports diplomatic solutions to international conflicts and opposes actions that could further escalate regional tensions.
